BIG BELLY SOLAR TRASH COMPACTORS PROPOSED FOR 71ST AND STONY ISLAND

South Shore Businesses:

I want to inform you of a proposal that's being put forth for the Commissioners in South Shore (SSA #42) 71st Stony.

The manufacturer of Big Belly and their local distributor, Crowley Engineering, LLC has visited Chicago and met with Commissioners last year.

The Chamber is now going into its third year as Service Provider for Special Service Area #42 (otherwise the area known as Stony Island, 67th-79th Street and 71st Street, Kimbark to South Shore Drive) in Chicago.

Big Belly Trash Compactors are now in several neighborhoods in the city, including South East Chicago, Wicker Park, Lakeview as well as the museum of Science and Industry and City has purchased for 63rd Street Beach and other locations.

Some area businesses, including ShoreBank, Payless Shoe Source support placing a unit near 71st Jeffery (N side), a heavy trafficted area. We are asking the Commissioners to vote on the matter at today's Commissioners' Meeting, Thursday, January 8, 2009 4:00 p.m. at BUFI Training Rm. 1803 E. 71st Street, Chicago, IL 60649. The Commissioners will be asked to consider purchasing at least 3 units, which may include AD Panels for Advertising opportunities of area businesses.

*About the SSA #42:
The SSA is the result of the efforts of 5th Ward Alderman Leslie A. Hairston and the South Shore Chamber, Inc. SSA stands for S- Special; S- Service; A-Area #42 means this the 42nd number of SSA’s created in the City. SSA #42 is 1 of 37 Active SSAs in the City. Residents and businesses within the SSA#42 boundaries receive special services, which make South Shore streets more beautiful and safer. The services are funded by a tax levy from residents and businesses in the service area. SSA #42 Boundaries are: Stony Island: 67thN to 79thS on SW side and to 73rd St on SE side of Stony, 71st Street: Kimbark W to South Shore Drive/Exchange/Yates E.

Municipal Ordinances -City of Chicago

City of Chicago Snow/ Ice Removal Policy
Reminder to all businesses-

In accordance with City of Chicago Municipal Code 4-4-310 SNOW & ICE REMOVAL ARE REQUIRED of business owners/licensees. Please shovel snow/ice from the sidewalks in front and adjacent of your stores/property. If you own property that is currently vacant you still must comply. City of Chicago FINES RANGE from $250-$500 per day.

Also 4-4-310 Public ways--Maintenance--Littering prohibited states, "It is unlawful for any person licensed to engage in any business or occupation on premises abutting a public way, or for any person using any part of a public way for or in connection with his business or occupation, to litter or to permit the accumulation of any paper, rubbish or refuse upon that portion of the public way abutting said premises or on and about that portion of the public way so used. It shall also be the duty of the licensee to remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of his premises."

SSA #42 Contractor, Cleanslate's contract only specifies removal of snow from crosswalks and bus stops when snow is more than 2". Regular ( 4days per week) public way maintenance is conducted by Cleanslate for not less than 11.5 hrs/week along the SSA #42 Map Area of Stony Island, 67th Street to 79th (W), to 73rd (E) and 71st Street, Kimbark (W) to South Shore Drive (E).
